Stuart Road
Acton, London, United Kingdom, 1997–1999
Originally providing commercial accommodation at ground level and residential above and behind, this Edwardian corner property was converted into a series of residential units each with a separate entrance.
Construction works included the formation of a new façade in place of the original shopfront, and a 40 m2 apartment at ground level. The new façade, in contrast to the original, is simply composed and made up of few elements. Its layered composition reflects the mixed residential-commercial character of the location. A surrounding perimeter wall creates a buffer between the busy street corner and domestic interior.
Exterior walls are finished in plain cement render with textured mineral paint finish. The apartment interior has painted plaster walls, Spanish limestone floors and counter tops, and etched glass screens. European oak furniture and linen upholstery was made especially for the project.
