Astoria Penthouse
Chamonix Mont Blanc, France, 2004–2009
Recognising the potential for exceptional views of Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi from the Astoria Building in the centre of Chamonix, the client for this project purchased the volume contained directly under the roof of the building, anticipating a new apartment with views taking in the Mont Blanc massif. All non-essential partitions within the triangulated roof volume were removed to create a new space large enough to house an apartment with open plan living, with substantial retractable glazed roof able to withstand snow loading, orientated directly towards Mont Blanc. 3 bedrooms partitioned in line with existing structure, have their own view of the Alps.
The exposed original timber structure was restored, soffit insulated and lined to create a warm internal environment, and selected solid and glazed partitions are introduced to create varying levels of privacy. All floors are surfaced with larch, and low level sleeping and lounging platforms are formed from the same material. A freestanding central kitchen and bathroom are from Mont Blanc Granite.
